No Place For Something Obscene Or Profanity In New Mexico

A man in Santa Fe had a New Mexico license plate that says IB6UB9 since 2009 according to KOAT “Man fights for controversial license plate back“. It seems to translate to “I will be 6 and you be 9 in a 69 sexual configuration” however the owner says it does not. The state has said it received an unspecified number of complaints that is has no proof of.

Robert Anaya’s vanity license plate was initially approved back in 2009, but he just got a letter from the Motor Vehicle Division saying it’s revoked because it’s considered obscene. The plate in question reads IB6UB9.

“If something is obscene or profanity, we have no place for it in New Mexico,” Taxation and Revenue Department Secretary Demesia Padilla said.

Anaya said his plate is not a sexual reference, but an inside joke with a friend from a night at a casino.

However, the state said it’s gotten enough complaints to cancel the plate. The state can’t provide those complaints because officials say they weren’t written or recorded.

Meow The Cat Has Died

I didn’t have a chance to write about Meow the cat when he became famous for being extremely overweight at about 40 pounds at the Santa Fe Humane Society.

Meow has died due to “respiratory complications” according to the Santa Fe Humane Society’s website.

Wired Magazine On The Southwest Megafires

Wired.com’s article “Megafires May Change the Southwest Forever“

The plants and animals of the southwestern United States are adapted to fire, but not to the sort of super-sized, super-intense fires now raging in Arizona.

The product of drought and human mismanagement, these so-called megafires may change the southwest’s ecology. Mountainside Ponderosa forests could be erased, possibly forever. Fire may become the latest way in which people are profoundly altering modern landscapes.

The two closest fires to me are still burning. The Las Conchas Fire in the Jemez Mountains near Las Alamos is at 92,735 and is close to being the largest fire in New Mexico. The Pacheco Fire near Santa Fe and the Pecos Wilderness has burned a measly 10,000 acres and is 24% contained.

The Donaldson fire is much more south of me but has burned over 43,000 acres.

We are getting signs of Monsoon weather.

Say hello to New Mexico’s newest fire, the Pacheco Canyon Fire In Santa Fe. The fire was visible from my house in Rio Rancho on the day it started but I haven’t been able to see it since Saturday. On Sunday there was too much smoke from the Arizona Wallow fire to see much of anything.

InciWeb says the fire has burned over 3000 acres and describes it as extreme.

New Mexico To New England In A Gypsy Wagon

Over at Whittled Down, they are moving from New Mexico to New England. They are going to do it in a canvas-topped gypsy wagon that they are building themselves.

In building this contraption, they borrowed some tools from the ReStore’s new tool lending library and were interviewed by the Santa Fe New Mexican. Apparently the Santa Fe New Mexican screwed up the article because “every detail about us is wrong, including the quotes”.

Electromagnetic Sensitivity In Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe is the capital city of New Mexico but it’s not nearly as populated as Albuquerque and is known for being artsy and for electromagentic sensitive people.

A Santa Fe man who says he suffers from electromagnetic sensitivity is suing his next-door neighbor for refusing to turn off her cell phone and other electronic devices.

Arthur Firstenberg, who has actively opposed the proliferation of wireless systems in public buildings, claims he has been made homeless by Raphaela Monribot’s rejection of his requests.

New Mexico is the right place to live to get away from all electromagntic signals. The Very Large Array in Socorro, New Mexico is in a signal free zone. One does not have to go far into the desert to get away signals but living anywhere near or in a city is a bad idea.

80 Year Contract Over At Carslbad Caverns

The company that has supplied concession services at Carlsbad Caverns National Park for nearly 80 years has lost the contract. Cavern Supply Co. will be replaced next year by Carlsbad Cavern Trading, owned by Santa Fe-based businessman Armand Ortega, to supply food, drinks, retail, kennel and vending services at the park. The new vendor was chosen after competitive bids, said Michael Snyder, National Park Service Intermountain regional director. Five companies bid. Carlsbad Cavern Trading will begin operations once a project to renovate the park’s visitor center is completed, expected next March. Cavern Supply president Frank Hodnett said it was a shock when the National Park Service chose another vendor. His Carlsbad company was specifically incorporated in 1927 to provide concession services at the park, he said. “We have no other business except the concession,” Hodnett said. “There is a very good possibility that we will close, but at this time, I can’t say for sure.” Cavern Supply sold its first meal in the cavern’s famed underground lunch room in 1927 and opened a surface restaurant the next year.

National Park Service is trying to choose service contracts based on merit and not senority. A good thing in my opinion.

I was at carlsbad caverns several years ago (pre digital cameras). The food was pre prepared sandwiches that came in boxes. The boxes looked like they were from 1927.

Stupid Law Tricks

This is really giving New Mexico a good name.

Late last week, a Santa Fe District Court judge signed a temporary restraining order against talk-show host David Letterman alleging he has tormented a city resident for more than 10 years by using code words on his television program .

Apparently David Letterman is using his eyes and other gestures to send secret signals to this woman. The judge apparently agreed!
