Albuquerque Craigslist: Red 1981 Delorean

One reason I’ve been regularly watching the Albuquerque Craigslist is that I’m determined to one day own a Delorean. About 10 years ago I came across one for $10,000 and I regret not buying it. Although Deloreans rarely show up recently a red one appeared.

1981 DeLorean 4.3l Chevy engine conversion 200hp (almost twice stock hp) approximately $9000, Corvette pistons, cam ext. Auto trans. Fresh Interior and 28000 miles. Couple of dings on passenger door. Good tires. New door, hood, trunk struts. Sorry pics taken at night if you want more pics of interior contact me.

The craigslist ad includes a link to ebay motors. I would much rather have a Delorean in it’s original configuration, no chevy motor and I would much rather have one not painted. It’s a stainless steel body, what’s the point of painting it?

Solar Array Ventures Inc. Is Moving To New Mexico

What’s good news for Albuquerque is bad news for Austin. New Mexico offered the Texas company Solar Array Ventures Inc. (SAVe)such good incentives that they are moving the whole company, headquarters and all, to New Mexico. They wont say exactly what New Mexico offered.

The City of Albuquerque website says the factory will be built on the west side on Cordero Mesa near I-40 on Paseo del Vulcan and could employ up to 1000 people in 5 years. Assuming Texas doesn’t pull a Tesla and manage to keep SAVe in Austin.

Oddly, not a single Albuquerque TV news site has an article on the company coming to Albuquerque that I can find.

The Tesla Model S Coupe Previewed And Preorderd

4AC2F50B-743E-4AEA-94E7-44BF58D8E228.jpg

Tesla finally announced their new Model S Coupe last week. This is the car that Tesla was supposed to build in Albuquerque, but moved the manufacturing to San Jose California when they got a better deal. That didn’t work out either and it’s not clear to me exactly where they plan to build the Model S.

I lived in San Jose in 2001 and it’s a crazy place compared to Albuquerque. I’m still not sure how they ever thought it would be cheaper to produce the cars there rather in Albuquerque in the long term. It could end up being a good thing for Albuquerque if they go out of business like Eclipse Aviation did. I’m certainly not wishing for Tesla to go under but the times are tough and I’ve read some possible bad news in that regard. I would still like to see them have some manufacturing in Albuquerque.

At $40,000 over 500 sedans have already been pre ordered. It’s a good looking car but I won’t be on the buyers list anytime soon. Maybe if they came out with a pickup truck I might have to get out the credit card.

Ghost Shadow: Albuquerque's Real Life Superhero

Apparently Albuquerque has a super hero and his name might be Ghost Shadow. Might be because he (and I’m assuming he is a he) didn’t want to tell the Alibi what his real superhero name is.

According the email interview, Ghost Shadow is 42 years old, wears a kevlar suit and sometimes a mask and has been doing it since 911.

I don’t keep up with the superhero scene here in town or elsewhere, but I haven’t seen any reports that attribute crime fighting to any of these guys. You would think that if a mysterious hero saved someone from crime that it would be on KOB.

Train Engine AT&SF 2926 Restoration In Albuquerque

Johnny Mango has a terrific story on Duke City Fix about the restoration of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad locomotive 2926. The locomotive sat in Coronado Park in Albuquerque from 1956 to 2000 and was a jungle gym until they surrounded it with chain link fence and then finally moved it in 2000.

They are trying to get the train restored in time for the statehood centennial in 2012. They need another $500,000 to complete the project in time.

killbox has a number of pictures of this train on Flickr.

Mobster Movie Style Death In Rio Rancho

New Mexico’s location to Mexico means there’s often some sort of dead body out on the mesa related to drug trafficking.

Danny Baca was apparently supposed to take about $7000 worth of drugs to a drug cartel contact in El Paso. Instead he decided to come to Albuquerque. A mistake since they found his body, which had been burnt and shot, out on the mesa.

Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department says Baca was killed over a relatively small amount of money–but the drug cartels aren’t know for cutting people breaks.

You would think anyone getting into the drug business would know this.

Taking Pictures On Pueblos Prohibited?

52926D8F-3E67-40FE-A467-96C17BF9A652.jpg

A story on the local news says taking pictures of or in pueblos is prohibited. There’s several pueblos near Albuquerque and the Rail Runner goes through them. The train conductor attempts to stop passengers from taking pictures of the Pueblos while the train runs through their land.

What is their legal right to prohibit photography where it’s legal to photograph in every other public location in the US? Can they really do anything about it? What will the Rail Runner do if someone continues to take pictures?

Tesla In New Mexico… Not Anymore

Tesla issued a press release in February of 2007 stating that they will build their WhiteStar sedan in New Mexico.

Governor Richardson announced today that Tesla Motors will build a new automobile assembly facility in Albuquerque, bringing 400 high wage jobs and a total capital investment of $35 million. Construction on the 150,000 square foot plant will begin in April 2007, at the latest.

It’s the end of June 2008 and no electric car plants have been built. The state of California screwed New Mexico out of that opportunity.

Ze’ev Drori, CEO of Tesla Motors, and Governor Schwarzenegger announced today at a press conference at Tesla Motors headquarters that Tesla’s next product, a 4-door, 5-passenger sedan, will be manufactured at a facility in the state of California.

Previously it had been announced that the sedan manufacturing facility was planned for Albuquerque, New Mexico. After a thorough review of the program, Tesla decided that it would be highly advantageous to build manufacturing facilities in close proximity to the engineering and research and development functions in Tesla’s San Carlos headquarters. Tesla’s battery pack, a critical component of the Tesla Roadster, is currently manufactured in California. Final assembly of the Tesla Roadster is also currently in California.

That really sucks.
