Native New Yorker Coming To Rio Rancho

My favorite wing place from Arizona is coming to Rio Rancho (and Albuquerque).

A Gilbert-based restaurant chain is expanding outside Arizona. This year, Native New Yorker expects to start opening restaurants in New Mexico. Four eateries in Albuquerque and one in Rio Rancho are planned, said Mario Altiery, president of Upside Group, a franchise consulting firm working with the company.

“The Native” as we refer to it, was my favorite wing place. If only In-N-Out Burger would follow.

Burned Up Wire Nut

Near the end of last summer, I had a power outtage. After the outage my swamp cooler thermostat would show the temp of 22 degrees, which I assume was the lowest temp the thermostat can read. The damage was probably from a power surge.

swamp cooler power wire nutNow the thermostat seems to correctly read the temp, but I wanted to replace it anyways. So I pulled out the wiring and found wire nut that holds the main power wires together has burned up. It looks like it shorted out, for lack of a better explaination. Thankfully the wiring is all contained in a metal box becasue the inside of the box, near where the wire nut was placed, looks like was burned.

It’s very strange, this has to have happned since I moved in becasue I replaced the thermostat. Everything still works fine. What would cause a wire nut to burn up?

New Mexico Might Declare Pluto a Planet

What the hell? New Mexico Might Declare Pluto a Planet (Via Slashdot.)

“Wired and others are reporting that for New Mexico, the fight for Pluto is not over. Seven months after the International Astronomical Union downgraded the distant heavenly body to a ‘dwarf planet,’ a state representative in New Mexico aims to give the snubbed world back some of its respect. State lawmakers will vote Tuesday on a bill that proposes that ‘as Pluto passes overhead through New Mexico’s excellent night skies, it be declared a planet.’ The lawmaker who introduced the measure represents the county in which Clyde Tombaugh, Pluto’s discoverer, was born. For many of us old timers, and those who had the honor of meeting Clyde, this just causes a belly laugh and is pure fun. Not to mention a bit of poking a stick in the eye.”

More Roofing Woes

IMG_8266.JPGAAAGHHHH. I woke up to this a few days ago, a roof tile had blown off in some winds. It wasn’t just this one, a whole bunch of them can be found around the property.

I don’t get it. After I made some repairs last year, they seemed to hold up. In fact it help up through hurricane force winds. I’m glad we just got winds and not rain. This weekend is suppose to be warm, I plan to get up there and make more more roof repairs.

[Update 3/9/07 12:50 PM] replaced the shingles today. I think I have discovered the failure mode. Some of the staples appear to be popping out. Even just a little bit of the staple popping out is enough to lift up the shingle, giving the wind something to grab onto. I inspected all the shingles and found several others that were sticking up. Removed those staples and replaced them with nails.

Intel Will Upgrade Rio Rancho Plant

Intel Corp. said on Monday it will spend $1 billion to $1.5 billion to retool a factory in New Mexico, which will start to make chips with cutting-edge 45-nanometer-wide transistors in the second half of 2008.

The factory to be renovated in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, is known as Fab 11X and will be the fourth Intel plant to use 45-nanometer technology, which includes new materials that boost chip efficiency by cutting leakage of electrical current.

My employment is secure.

Here’s a little bit more information about the IRB that was used to fund this upgrade. Looks like there’s some money left in the pot.

Talking Urinal Cakes Stolen

I would have never imagined creating this sentence. Turtle Mountain Brewery company has had it’s anti-drunk driving talking urinal cakes stolen. If you do a search for “talking Urinal Cakes” you will learn how the Rio Rancho based Turtle Mountain is the first to get them in New Mexico.

I saw the report on channel 4, I will update with a link once they decide to put it up.

Update 2/20/07 10:22PM] Here’s a AP article.

At the Turtle Mountain, the urinal cakes have proved so intriguing that three have been swiped already. “I’m mystified why someone would stick their hand into one of our urinals,” Ortiz said. “But I’m sure we’ll see them on eBay. Hopefully, the seller will advertise it as, `Stolen from Turtle Mountain.'”

Crap In The Attic

When I was house hunting one of the things on my list was a house with a accessible attic. This house does not disappoint. In fact the previous owners laid plywood through a large amount of it for storage. They also left a lot of trash up there.

I have found:

  • Empty cardboard boxes.
  • Kids “artwork”. Like kindergarden level stuff.
  • A jockstrap
  • Empty Old Milwaukee beer cans.
  • Spilled rat poison.
  • More cardboard boxes.
  • Little pieces of miscellaneous paper.
  • Wire hangers.

City Manager Canned

I’ve been thinking and saying out loud that the City Manager should be fired. Mainly for things like Unser Road and other such things going on in Rio Rancho. Loos like I’m not the only one as City Manager Jim Palenick was canned by the City Council. KRQE reported on it and so did the Citizens Media Group.

Palenick’s management style alienated some on staff, and two department heads had threatened to resign, including Rob Anderson, director of development services. Anderson had followed Palenick from Bay City, Mich., where Palenick had been fired from his job as city manager in August 2002.

Hopefully we will see some better planing around here with the next guy.

2nd Annual X Prize Cup

IMG_6473.JPGFriday and Saturday marked the second annual X Prize cup in which the AP has a article about. I wasn’t able to make it to this years event (my pictures from last years are on Flickr).

A lot of other people did go and they put their pictures on Flickr. Looks like it was a much better event with real working aircraft. One thing I noted last year were most of the stuff on display were mockups, as opposed to actual working machines. Not to mention that they had more stuff in the air. I will try to go next year but will go for sure when it’s at the real space port.

Another interesting note, last year it was call the “preview event” and this year it’s called the “second annual”, meaning that last year was really the “first annual”. Whatever.

AOL Closes New Mexico Offices

This shouldn’t have really been a surprise after AOL said they are going to a free service model.

AOL announced Wednesday it will lay off 1,300 employees by closing call centers in New Mexico and Arizona as part of a previously announced restructuring plan. AOL, the Time Warner Inc. online unit formerly known as America Online, also plans to sell its call center in Ogden, Utah. The cuts include 900 layoffs at the Albuquerque call center and 400 jobs at the center in Tucson, Ariz., AOL spokesman Nicholas Graham said. The Arizona and New Mexico call centers each have operated for 10 years.
